Canadian Nurses Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Board Members

Chair: David Hill, O.C.

Mr. Hill is a native of Ottawa, a Founding Partner and Co-Chair of the law firm Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP. Mr. Hill is Member of the Order of Canada and has been involved in health related activities for many years. He is the Past Chair of Board of Trustees of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Loeb Health Research Institute and a Member of the Board of the David Smith Centre. He recently retired as Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre

 

President: Lucille Auffrey

Ms. Lucille Auffrey, RN, MN, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). Prior to this, Lucille was the Executive Director of the Fredericton based Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB), and is a board member of both CNA and the Canadian Nurses Protective Society. Mme Auffrey is the first nurse appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointments for the Province of New Brunswick. She was also the first nurse asked to serve as a public representative on the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission and became a member of the Health Canada's Consultative Committee for French-speaking Minority Communities. Mme Auffrey holds a Baccalaureate in Nursing and a Masters of Science in Nursing and Health Studies.

 

Vice-Chair: Wendy Nicklin

Ms. Wendy Nicklin is Executive Director with the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA). Formerly Ms. Nicklin was the Civic Campus Operating Officer and Vice President of Nursing at the Ottawa Hospital. She has had a distinguished career in nursing and health care, having taught Nursing at Queen's University, worked in nursing practice as Staff Nurse, Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. She has also held positions as Director of Nursing, VP Nursing and Patient Services.

 

Board Member: Murray Elston

On January 5, 2004 Mr. Murray Elston was appointed President of Canadian Nuclear Association ( CNA ) after having served as President of Canada 's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D) since November 1, 1998.

From January to October 1998, Mr. Elston was a member of the Energreen Solutions Group and from 1994 to 1997 served as President of the Ontario Interlink Industrial Park .

From 1981 to 1994 Mr. Elston served as a member of the Ontario Legislature where he held a number of positions including Minister of Health, Chairman of the Management Board, Minister of Financial Institutions and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr. Elston is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Law degree. Prior to being elected to the Ontario Legislature, Mr. Elston practiced law in Bruce County, Ontario.

Mr. Elston is Chair of Ontario's Clean Water Legacy Trust and Chair of the Board of Directors of the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research. He is also a member on the Boards of Directors of the Canadian Nurses Foundation ( CNF ), HydroOne, General Insurance Company of The Royal Bank of Canada and Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF).


Board Member: John Hartin

Mr. John Hartin recently retired from Nortel following a lengthy career during which time he held various management positions in several different parts of the business. Immediately before his retirement, John was Director, Business Operations, Global Supply Management – a position where he was accountable for many aspects of Nortel’s interaction with its global supply base. Prior to this, his management positions included Director, Communications, Global Supply Management; Director Communications and Marketing Support, Semiconductor Components Group; and Director, Plant Engineering and Facilities Management for the Semiconductor Components Group in Ottawa.

Mr. Hartin’s involvement in the community includes: Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Civic Hospital Foundation, Past Member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Loeb Medical Research Institute, Past Member of the Board of Trustees of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Past Member of the Board of the Ottawa Health Research Institute, and Past Member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Ottawa-Carleton.

 

Board Member: Jim Irving

Jim Irving joined Johnson & Johnson in 1981. Currently, Jim is Director of Government Relations and Strategic Affairs. His role with the federal government and Ontario provincial government is to develop business relationships with the politicians and bureaucrats –to understand and influence healthcare funding towards the health and welfare of Canadians, and to support the adoption of J&J’s innovative new healthcare technologies.

Jim is also the Canadian J&J liaison for nursing and nursing leadership support. He co-ordinates all major support programs such as the Canadian Nursing Foundation/JJMP education scholarship, the Dorothy M. Wylie Institute, the OHA Nursing Leadership Award, and the J&J/Wharton Fellows Program in Leadership for Nurse Executives – to name but a few.

Jim is a graduate of Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He is a faculty member of Seneca College, Toronto, having taught marketing and sales courses in the Continuing Education Division. He also has been actively involved with the Foundation Boards of The Scarborough Hospital, Markham Stouffville Hospital and The Bob Rumball Association for the Deaf.

Board Member: Ginette Lemire Rodger

Dr. Ginette Lemire Rodger is the Vice President Professional Practice, and Chief Nursing Executive at the Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa University Heart Institute and the Rehabilitation Centre as well as Adjunct Professor at the schools of nursing of the University of Ottawa and Queen's University.

She is past President of the Canadian Nurses Association. Prior to 1989, she was concurrently the Executive Director of the Canadian Nurses Association, Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Nurses Foundation and Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Nurses Protective Society.

  

Throughout her career, she has served on commissions and board of directors of many health, nursing, political and educational organizations, including serving as Chair of the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation and member of the Medical Research Council of Canada. Ginette has been involved internationally with nursing and health projects on all continents of the world and at the policy level with the World Health Organization.


Board Member: Scott McElligott

Mr. Scott McElligott graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1981 with an Honors Bachelor of Commerce degree with a specialization in finance and accounting. Scott has also successfully completed the PFP diploma, Canadian Securities Course, and Registered Representative certification as well as many industry courses such as the STEP designation of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

After a 10-year career assisting John Deere dealer franchises with sales and financial management programs working all across Canada.
Scott joined the Royal Bank Financial Group with Royal Trust in domestic estate and investment planning. In 1996 Scott joined Royal Bank's international services division. First as Senior Manager, International Services, he assisted clients, principally in the areas of international trusts and investment services and provided technical sales support on cross-border, tax and estate-planning matters. In November 1999, he was appointed as National Sales Manager, International Services. In November 2002, Scott was named Vice President Sales for the Royal Bank Global Private Banking Canadian distribution platform overseeing the international and domestic high net worth sales teams.

In April 2003, Scott joined the TD Private Client Group as Managing Director to open the Ottawa TD Private Client Centre. Scott now oversees the integrated approach for high net worth clients in Ottawa and has continued his practice in the domestic and international trust and investment planning area.

Scott is married and lives in Ottawa with his wife Lyne and two children. Scott is an active skier and ski coach. He is also an active supporter of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation supporting the planned giving area.

 

Board Member: Kaaren Ruth Neufeld, RN, MN

 

Ms. Kaaren Neufeld, is the chief nursing officer and executive director at the St. Bonfiface General Hospital in Manitoba.  Ms Neufeld has had a distinguished career in nursing and health care, having taught at the Misericordia General Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Manitoba, and having worked in nursing practice as a staff nurse in the newborn nurseries and labour and delivery.

 

Ms Neufeld is a member of the boards of directors for the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, the Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, and the Canadian Nurses Association; president, Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses (2002-2003).

Board Member: Howard Shearer

Mr. Howard Shearer joined Hitachi in October 1984, and is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hitachi Canada Ltd. Prior to this, he served as Vice-President & General Manager, HCL-Semiconductor Division, and as a member of HCL’s board, positions to which he was appointed in 1999.

Previous to joining Hitachi he was employed by Texas Instruments. Mr. Shearer holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton Ontario.

Howard Shearer’s other Board Memberships include the Japan Society and Responsible Gambling Council of Canada (RGCC).

Howard Shearer also holds Memberships in the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC), University of Toronto at Mississauga, Canada Nuclear Association (CNA), Energy Council of Canada (ECC), and the Mississauga Board of Trade.
