| For over 90 years – since its
founding in 1908 – Canadian Nurses Association
(CNA) has produced and collected a substantial quantity
of archives and artifacts documenting CNA’s
own activities, as well as the history of nursing
in Canada and around the world.
CNA collection is the most significant of its kind
in the country. It has been systematically maintained
and preserved over the decades to ensure the vital
history of nursing’s role in the evolution of
Canadian society is passed on to future generations
in an orderly and accessible manner.
In recognition of the importance of these records
to all Canadians, the Canadian
Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum
and the National Archives of Canada signed a historic
agreement with CNA in 2000 to establish a national
nursing history collection.
Materials originally held at CNA House form the
core of the collection. However, items of historical
significance have been donated to the collection by
Nursing Groups and the public from across Canada.
The Lighting the Lamp fundraising campaign was launched
to support Canadian Nursing History Collection project.
Over the three years of the campaign $127,000.00 was
raised in addition to an estimated $33,000.00 in textual
records, audio-visual materials, portraits and photographs,
artifacts, textbooks, Nurses’ kits, medals and
pins. Significant “in kind” contributions
of personnel, administration and overhead were also
made by the Partners.
The Foundation
is proud to have worked on this project with the four
founding Partners of the Collection; Canadian Nurses
Association (CNA), the Canadian
Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum,
and the National Archives.
