Birks Family Foundation:

The mission of the Birks Family Foundation is to contribute to a higher standard of living and quality of life for all Canadians.  To this end they support higher education, as education is known to be a critical factor in improving standards of living and quality of life.  The recipient of this award is Christine Dahonick f rom the University of New Brunswick at Humber College  (Mississauga, Ontario).

   

Canadian Nurses Foundation Scholarship:

The Canadian Nurses Association predicts a shortfall of over 100,000 nurses by 2016.  At the same time, the health care needs of Canada’s population are becoming more complex.  At the Canadian Nurses Foundation, our research and scholarship programs address these challenges.

 

The Canadian Nurses Foundation Scholarship was established to make certain a nursing student from each Province is awarded a scholarship.    The recipients of this year's awards are V. Renée Fagan from Memorial University of Newfoundland (Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland) and Andrea Needer from the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Saskatchewan).

Eleanor J. Martin Award:

Eleanor Martin was a Canadian nurse who established Schools of Nursing Assistance in Ceylon in the 1950's. This award is an enduring testament to her devotion and commitment to nursing. The recipient of this year's award is Anina Vanderlinden f rom the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta).

 
Eaton Foundation Scholarship:

This scholarship was created to aid charitable organizations in the field of health development in Canada. The recipient of this year's award is Jennifer Yoon from Centennial College (North York, Ontario).

John J. Vanderlee Award for Male Nursing Students:

This award was established by Mr. Vanderlee, a retired nurse and educator, to encourage men to enter and remain in the nursing profession.The two recipients of this year's awards are Sean Share from the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Aaron Burkhart from Sault Ste Marie College (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario).

Johnson & Johnson Medical Products:
Johnson & Johnson is a manufacturer of health care products and medical devices. The award is dedicated to Operating Room nurses. The recipient of this year's award is Heather Gesner from the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, New Brunswick).
   

 

Judy Hill Memorial Scholarship:

In 1972, nurse Judy Hill died in an airplane crash while nursing Inuit patients on a medical evacuation flight from Cambridge Bay to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.  This memorial award is not only in memory of Judy Hill, but of the difficult and often dangerous role of northern nurses.  This scholarship is dedicated to outpost nursing. Tricia Newport from the University of British Columbia (Whitehorse, Yukon Territories).

 

Dr. Margaret Munro Scholarship:

As the Founding Dean of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island, Dr. Munro has a particular interest in promoting education.  The recipient of this year's award is Rachel Larivée from the University of Toronto  (Charlottetown, PEI).

 

Northern Scholarship:

Established by Mrs. Erin M. Hogg, this scholarship award is dedicated to Canadian nurses whose focus is northern nursing. The recipient of this year's award is Deborah Montpetit from Nunavut Arctic College (Iqaluit, Nunavut).
 

Nova Scotia Nurses Baccalaureate Scholarship:

This scholarship was established in 2003 by the Nova Scotia Registered Nurses Foundation. It is granted to a nursing student from Nova Scotia. The recipient of this year's award is Jody Wells from Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia).

 

Sharon Nield Memorial Scholarship:

Established by family, co-workers, and friends as Sharon believed that a strong foundation of knowledge is the basis of professional caring and that learning never stops. The recipient of this year's award is Kirstin McLaughlin from the University of Alberta  (Calgary, Alberta).

 

Tecla Lin & Nelia Laroza Memorial Award:

Established by the W. Garfield Weston Foundation to honour the work and courage of nurses during the SARS outbreak.  The recipient of this year's award is Maryia Nikitsina from York University (North York, Ontario).

 


 
Masters Award Recipients
 
Aplastic Anemia/Myelodysplasia Nursing Grant:
Established by the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplasia Association of Canada, this grant is awarded to nurses with haematology/oncology as their specialty and/or as the focus of their research/studies.  The recipient of this year's award is Lucie Lacasse from the University of Ottawa  (Ottawa, Ontario).
 
Baxter Corporation/Jill E. Schneuker Fellowship in Nursing Sciences:
Baxter Corporation is Canada's largest health care and laboratory supply company. This scholarship, initiated in 1993 by Baxter Corporation, is a tribute to Jill E. Schneuker, a former employee of their company. The recipient of this year's award is Carolyne Emard from the University of Sherbrooke  (Verdun, Quebec).
 

 

Dr. Dorothy J. Kergin Scholarship:

Dr. Kergin had a distinguished career in nursing, as a Professor, Associate Dean of Health Sciences at McMaster University and, later Professor and Director of the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria.  She served on the councils and executives of a number of nursing health-related organizations and was a consultant to several Canadian universities as well as to the Aga Khan Foundation. The recipient of this year's award is Sheryl Ewing from the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta).

 
 
Extendicare Award for Gerontology:
Extendicare Health Services Inc. is one of North America’s largest operators of long term care and assisted living facilities for the elderly, including home health care and rehabilitative therapy services in Canada.  The recipient of this year's award is Judith Worrell from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta).
 

Dr. Helen K. Mussallem Fellowship:

This fellowship has been established by Dr. Mussallem, OC, D.ST.V., BN, MA, Ed D., LL.D, D.Sc., FF.R.C.N., M.R.S.H., a distinguished nurse, ambassador, author and consultant. Throughout her career and into retirement, Dr. Mussallem has effected changes that have benefited nurses around the world. The recipient of this year's award is Lorelei Newton from the University of Victoria  (Victoria, British Columbia).
 

 

Hoffmann-La Roche Hepatology Nursing Fellowship:

Established in 2002, this fellowship is designed to assist a graduate nurse who is pursuing education in the area of viral hepatitis. The recipient of this year's award is Lauralie Richard from the University of Montreal (Montral, Quebec).
 
Military Nurses of Canada Award founded by Col. Agnes Campbell Neill:
A bequest of the late Col. Agnes Campbell Neill, R.N., this award is also funded by the Nursing Sisters of Canada for Canadian nurses who have the potential for distinguished achievement in nursing. The recipient of this year's award is Major Roger Scott from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta ).
 
 

 

Nurses Association of New Brunswick Scholarship:

This scholarship was established in 1998 by The New Brunswick Nurses Foundation and is made available to a New Brunswick nurse who excels in academic studies at the Master's level.  The recipient of this year's award is Alison Lucarotti from the University of Alberta  (Fredericton, New Brunswick).

 

 

Nova Scotia Nurses Master Scholarship:

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Nova Scotia Registered Nurses Foundation. It is granted to a nursing student from Nova Scotia. The recipient of this year's award is Brenda MacDonald from Dalhousie University (Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia).

 
 
 
 
Sanofi Pasteur Ltd. Scholarship in Community Health:
Sanofi Pasteur is Canada’s largest vaccine manufacturer and leader in biotechnology research. The recipient of this year's award is Raymonde "Lisa" Bourque from the University of Alberta  (Sherwood Park, Alberta).
 


 
Doctoral Award Recipients

Dr. Ann Beckingham Scholarship:

This scholarship was established in rememberence of Dr. Bechingham's passion for international and gerontological nursing, her commitment to education, and her innovative and original achievements.  The recipient of this year's award is Rose McCloskey from the University of New Brunswick  (Quispamsis, New Brunswick).

AstraZeneca Investing in Communities Scholarship:

AstraZeneca Canada Inc. is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Since 1989, they have been supporting a fellowship with CNF through their Endowed Research Fund at the Toronto Community Foundation.  They wish to make a difference to nurses delivering health care to under-serviced populations, both in urban, rural, and remote areas of Canada.   The recipient of this year's urban setting award is Dominique Tremblay from the University of Montreal (Varennes, Quebec) and t he recipient of this year's rural award is Angela Letendre from the University of Alberta (Vimy, Alberta).

Senator Norman M. Paterson Fellowship:
This fellowship honours the memory of Mr. Norman M. Paterson, who took a keen interest in philanthropy and served as President of the Victorian Order of Nurses in Canada. The recipient of this year's award is Martha Mackay from the University of British Columbia  (Vancouver, British Columbia).
 

Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing

The foundation supports the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International by actively raising money to fund research and scholarship, leadership and the honor society’s future.   The 2006 recipient is Donna Romano from the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario)

Meloche Monnex is Canada's leading provider of insurance and added-value financial services, and is known for its exceptional quality of customer service.  The recipient of this year's award is Sandra Regan from the University of British Columbia  (Vancouver, British Columbia).
 

Virginia A. Lindabury Awards:

A past editor of ‘Canadian Nurse’, Virginia Lindabury took extreme pride in being a nurse.  The recipient of this year's award is Shannon Spenceley from the University of Alberta (Lethbridge, Alberta).
